North Holmsland Klit

Lyngvig church

East of the road and surrounded by low dunes, the church of Lyngvig rises gradually out of this beautiful landscape. Built in 1869 and restored in the mid 1950s, the church stands white and majestic against the blue fjord. (A special folder on local churches is available from the Tourist Bureau.)

Lyngvig Fyr

Nr. Lyngvig Lighthouse

Another attractive landmark in Lyngvig is the lighthouse, Nr. Lyngvig Fyr. It stands on a dune in a scenic and protected area of 282 hectares with interesting plant and animal life.  The nature path mentioned earlier also passes through here. Nr. Lyngvig Fyr is a workplace. The senior lighthouse keeper is directly responsible to the Royal Danish Administration of Navigation and Hydrography.

Navigational charts indicate that the beacon sends out its beam every five seconds, and that the cone is 53 metres above sea level and may be seen 40 kilometres out to sea. Try watching the light on a dark evening. If walking in the area, please use the established paths and follow the rules generally applying to traffic in dunes and coastal plantations. In fine weather, visitors are welcome to ascend the lighthouse, unless maintenance work is in progress.

West Jutland Building Style

En route along Holmsland Klit we note the many beautiful old houses and farms. They are typical of the old West Jutland building style. Part of the building material was timber stranded along the coast, and the houses are thatched. The thatching is reeds growing along Ringkøbing Fjord and harvested for sale. The houses are built to withstand the violent winds from the North Sea.

Klegod

Further north we reach Klegod. The name derives from klegoy, meaning clayey point. There was formerly a spit at south Klegod, of which some parts still remain, and as the meadows lying down to the Fjord are heavy in clay, it was called "clayey point", in time becoming Klegod.

Badestrand

Here as anywhere along Holmsland Klit, you will find the scenery strangely and hauntingly beautiful with the luminous fjord begging you from one side and the magnificent sea calling you from the other. It is impossible to describe the impact of this area stretching from Nymindegab to Søndervig. It has to be experienced.
